ST: Nemesis, Through His Eyes

Used by Data (Brent Spiner)

Stat Trek: Nemesis

This amazing one of a kind item came from the collection of J. J worked on The Next Generation series and subsequent movies together with the prop master and set designers.  Some of his props and costumes were acquired, both during the production and after, by contacting the prop makers and others who worked directly with the props he wanted.  His credentials even include having props/items/TV/movie lore displayed that he sold to Paul Allen’s Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame in Seattle Washington.  He purchased these contacts from the studio and wanted to find out a little bit more about what he had.  He contacted the company and found out that each set of contacts were special made for the actors and cost about $100-$200 per eye for the solid colors and $800 plus for the multi colored ones.  The contacts came with the original case that Brent used every day he was filming!  J found this quote by Brent that said, “Much as I hated wearing them, there was something about the yellow contact lenses that flipped me into the gear of playing that character.”

Here is another interview, after Nemesis, by UnderGroundOnline:

"DE: After all these years, how easy it is to snap into Data?

Brent Spiner: It has become second nature. I was doing another movie the day before we shot Nemesis and twelve hours later, I was in Data makeup in the desert. As soon as I see Data in the mirror, I know how to play him. There is a certain feeling, not through the makeup, but when I put on those contact lenses in it does something to me."

Spiner even joked about them in his album titled Old Yellow Eyes Is Back.

If you look at that left contact you can see a small clip of a hair... Brent's wig?  Brent’s own hair?  Stray nose hair?  Also notice the yellowish discoloration that even sparkles down on the lower right corner.  This is believed to be traces of his makeup.

I put them in this clear case that I found at Target and added some new solution.  It can not be seen very well from the picture of the contacts in their original solution, but there is a little bit of color bleed-off.  If you look closely at the clear portion of the right contact, you can see what looks like a bunch of little sparkles.  This only showed up once I put them in the new solution.  This is again the same makeup that is seen on the outside of the case.
